Sumeet:- Hey, just look at the notice board. There is a new notice regarding our upcoming Half –Yearly Exam.
Binodini:- Oh! Yeah! You are right, Sumeet. Let me read the notice. ‘All the teachers of Class IX are hereby requested to prepare question sets on their respective subjects as per the prescribed guidelines stated below. There should be 20 objective questions of 1 mark each; 20 questions of 2 marks each; 5 questions of 3 marks each and 5 descriptive questions of 5 marks each. All question sets must be submitted at least 15 days before the date of Half-Yearly Exam.’
Deepak:- Hmm…that means…they are forcing us to study each and every line of our text book. It is not an easy task to go through all the chapters.
Sumeet:- But, it is also true that if you study your text book thoroughly, then you can also score high marks.

Manoj (CBSE student of class X):- Hey guys! The CBSE result is out. Mrs. Choudhury was telling that within half an hour, the result sheet will get displayed on the notice board. Let us see, how our seniors have done in the CBSE.
Srinivas (CBSE student of class X):- Hmm…after half an hour!
************************************************************
Fatima:- This year, our school have created a record in CBSE result. 3 students in the top 10 list of the CBSE result are from our school only. 18 students are there in the top 50 list of CBSE result. Poulomi Pal came first in our school and ranked 4th in All India level with 96.3%. The highest number of All India CBSE is 98.7%.
Mainak:- Baapre baap! How these people get so high marks and that too in All India level exams.
Fatima:- It is easier to score more marks in CBSE, but not in our Madhyamik Examination.
Indranil:- Madhyamik Exam is like playing Test Cricket and CBSE Exam is like playing One-Day Cricket. The 60% marks of Madhyamik Exam is equivalent to 80% marks of CBSE Exam. That’s why; you will find that if a CBSE candidate wants to take admission for Higher Secondary Course under WBCHSE, then his percentage of marks is subtracted by 20. Say, if this Poulomi wants to study Uccha Madyamik, then, her marks will be regarded as (96.3 -20) %= 76.3%.
Mainak:- O babah! Erokom byapar naaki! Then, it is better to study under WBBSE.

Madhumita Mandal (TV Anchor of DD Bengali Channel):- Today, in a local train compartment of Sealdah-Naihati route, some passengers have found around 600 Madhyamik Exam papers. Later those papers were submitted to Madhyamik Siksha Parshad. Last week also, in College Street area, some Madhyamik Exam papers were found in front of a book stall. All these answer sheets of the latest Madhyamik Exam were completely unchecked. These incidents have raised questions about the checking procedures of the Madhyamik Exam answer sheets. However, Mr. Kiranmoy Karmakar, the Vice Chancellor of Madhyamik Siksha Parshad made no comments regarding this issue.

Nayantara:- Today afternoon, when you were in your school, someone called at our landline number. Guess who?
Nonigopal:- How would I know? What a funny question!
Nayantara:- Chandrani got 602 out of 800 in Madhyamik Examination.
Nonigopal:- Oh! The Madhyamik Exam result is out. She has secured more than 75% marks.
Nayantara:- Yes! She has got star marks. She has studied in a school of a remote village, but, still, she managed to do such a good result in Madhyamik Exam. You are studying in one of the reputed schools of Kolkata; you must target to score at least 640 out of 800.
Nonigopal:- I can’t guarantee that. Chandrani is always more studious than me. But, mom! We got no information in our school that the Madhyamik Exam result has been declared today! Strange!
************************************************************
Mr. Roland:- What actually went wrong! In CBSE, our school students have created a new record but in Madhyamik Exam, only 3 students out of 79 students got Star Marks. 17 students have failed in Madhyamik Exam. Now, this is also a new record for our school. Failing in Madhyamik Examination is also a credit. People always want to see a failed student in Madhyamik Examination. They always ask the question, ‘How you have failed in the Madhyamik Examination?’
Subir Sir:- Sir, there are enough reasons for you to get excited in this regard, but, I am also shocked to see such a bad result. After giving the Bengali exam, at least 10 students were expecting to get letter marks (i.e. 80% marks) in Bengali 2nd Paper. I cannot believe that the students who got more than 75% in Bengali in the Test Exam of Class X have got less than 60% marks in Bengali in Madhyamik Exam. Maybe, it is a case of wrong evaluation!
Mr. Roland:- So, you want to say that the Madhyamik answer sheets of our students have not been evaluated properly. Sorry; I am not going to believe in it.
Mrs. Annapurna Amma (Life Science teacher of Saint Sebastian School):- No, Sir! Actually, Subir is assuming it right. This year, in Life Science, the highest marks is 69 and in Additional Biology, the highest marks is 78, whereas, in the Test Exam, at least 70% of the students got more than 75% both in Life Science and Biology.
Mr. Roland:- Maybe, the question paper of our Test Exam was easier than that of the Final Exam. See, I want valid evidence to prove that the exam papers of our students have not been evaluated properly.
Mrs. Mukherjee:- Sir, have you gone through the newspaper today? All the reputed schools of Kolkata have already complained about the issue.
Mr. Roland:- Is there any problem with Mathematics paper?
Mrs. Mukherjee:- No, Sir! 21 students got more than 90% in Maths paper and 7 of them got 100 out of 100.
Mr. Richards:- Sir! For an evaluator, checking the Maths paper is very easy. But, in other subjects, I think, something is fishy out here. Yesterday only, there was a news in TV that some unchecked answer sheets were found inside a train compartment. Sir, I think; we should have a talk with the Madhyamik Siksha Parshad in this regard.
Mr. Roland:- Yeah! You are right! But, I should not go alone. Mrs. Mukherjee, which are the other schools to complain about it?
Mrs. Mukherjee:- South Point, Nava Nalanda, Patha Bhavan and St. Xaviers.
Mr. Roland:- Ok! Let me talk with the Principals of these schools first.
************************************************************
Mrs. Sharmila Solomon (Head Mistress of South Point School):- This year, in Madhyamik Exam, only 52 students got Star marks (i.e. 75% marks) out of 489 students. Generally, in our South Point, even in the worst-case scenario, at least 25% of the total students have always got more than 75% marks. I teach Physical Science to my students. This year, in Madhyamik, the lowest mark in Physics is 62 and highest mark is 77. So, does it mean; that all my students are good in Physics. The guys who knew nothing about Physics also got more than 62 marks and the guys who were excellent in Physics got less than 77 marks. Do you think that I am a fool to believe in all these types of nonsense evaluation?
Mr. Kiranmay Karmakar (Vice Chancellor of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education):- Calm down, Madam! Every year, we face the same situation. Every year, some of the reputed English Medium Schools always complain about our evaluation system. Now, if your students have not studied well, then is it the fault of the evaluators?
Mr. Dharmendra Dhawan (Principal of Patha Bhavan):- Sir, you are just trying to wash off your hands. This is really a serious issue.
Mr. Ricardo Roland (Principal of Saint Sebastian School):- Sir, you want to say that our students don’t study at all. Let me tell you that this year our school students have created record in CBSE Exam.
Mr. Karmakar:- Now, please don’t start comparing Madhyamik Board with CBSE Board.
Mrs. Mala Moitra (Head Mistress of Nava Nalanda):- Why not! It is the brutal truth that the politics of the West Bengal Government plays a major role in the Madhyamik Exam result. That’s why; in every Madhyamik Exam, a topper emerges from a Bengali Medium School of a remote village of West Bengal. The CPI (M) government is always against the English language. That’s why; a Bengali medium School student starts learning English alphabets at Class VI, not in Class I.
Mr. Karmakar:- Instead of shouting inside my cabin, just tell me, what do you people want me to do now?
Mr. Dhawan:- Re-evaluate all the answer sheets which has not been evaluated.
Mr.Karmakar:- What do you mean by ‘not been evaluated’? Do you want to say that the evaluators of our Board have not checked the answer sheets and gave average marks?
Mrs. Solomon:- Yeah! Exactly so, Sir! Now, you are telling the truth.
Mr.Karmakar:- That’s a misconception you people are having. Sorry! Not a single answer sheet will be re-evaluated.
Mr. Roland (in a very excited tone):- Why not! You know the truth and still you are ignoring it.
Mr. Karmakar:- Mr. Roland! Please cool down. If you start reacting like this, then, we may take a decision to remove your school from our Board list.
Mr. Roland:- Oh! I also don’t want our school students to study under Madhyamik Board and spoil their career. What’s the use in keeping Madhyamik in our school, you tell me! CBSE syllabus is far more updated. In CBSE, everyone is getting good marks. In my entire career, I have hardly heard that CBSE Exam answer sheets were lying inside a train compartment or in front of a book stall.
Mr. Karmakar:- Mr. Roland, please try to understand my position also. I am just a part of this system. The money for CBSE comes from the Center, whereas the money for Madhyamik Board comes from the West Bengal Government. Under CBSE, an evaluator gets 5 bucks for checking 1 answer sheet, whereas under WBBSE, an evaluator gets 5 bucks for checking 10 answer sheets. Understand the difference! Several lakhs of students appear for the Madhyamik Exam. How many evaluators will you get to check those answer sheets? How much money can the West Bengal Government provide us to go for a good evaluation?
Mr. Dhawan:- Ok! We have understood your problem, but, that does not solve our problems. What about the students now!
Mr. Karmakar:- Do one thing; for the subjects in which you people think that there have been some goof-up in the evaluation process, apply for the scrutiny. We will go for the rapid scrutiny of those papers by spending some more money and give the final result.
Mrs. Moitra:- How rapid will be that scrutiny process? In normal cases of scrutiny, it takes around 3 to 6 months. I really don’t know why! I have seen ex-students of our school suffering. They failed to get admission in good colleges due to poor marks in Madhyamik. By the time, their marks got increased after the scrutiny; they have lost one academic year. So, it is an earnest request from my side that the scrutiny system should have a cycle period of 30 days only.
Mr.Karmakar:- Thanks for your suggestions! Thanks for giving your valuable feedbacks about our Board. We will surely take up these matters with the Education Ministry of Bengal to modernize the education system of Madhyamik level.
Mr. Roland:- Every time, you people make promises, give assurances, but, at the end of the day, no improvement takes place. That has always been the real tragic story of Bengal. Whenever I go and visit other states, people always make the remarks, ‘Bengal has brains which drain out in our state and we are improving with the help of their new innovative ideas.’ Once, Bengal was the hub of Education, but, due to politics, all the students are going for studies and research works in other states of India and contributing there. As a result, those states are shining and Bengal is drowning.
Mr. Karmakar (in an excited tone):- Come and sit in my chair for one month. After one month, you will forget those lectures that you gave just now. We are just puppets of the system. Unless, the Education Ministry under West Bengal Government brings some education reforms, nothing will change. All will go in the same fashion as it is. Anyway, I will take strict steps regarding the examination system. From next year onwards, you will not get any chance to complain about the WBBSE.
Mrs. Solomon:- Thank you, Sir! Thanks for giving your valuable time to us.
Mr. Karmakar:- Oh! You people are always welcome. Bye to all.
************************************************************
Ganga:- Madam! We have heard that this year, our school has done pathetic results in Madhyamik.
Mrs. Nainital:- Yeah! Too pathetic to talk about also! Study hard from now on. Do you know, one of the good students of your senior batch, Nirupam who came 3rd in the Test Exam failed to get 80% marks in the Science Group of Madhyamik Exam, because this year, everyone got the average marks in Life Science. For not having 80% in the Science Group, that boy was not even given the admission form in many reputed schools of Kolkata. Later, he got admission in a low-profile South Indian school of Kolkata. Such is the competition today! Even 1 mark matters! Our time was much better than that of yours. I don’t know where this competition will lead to; for you people and your next generation.
Rabi:- Madam! Is it true that from this year, not a single college in West Bengal will have Class XI and Class XII?
Mrs. Nainital:- Yeah! It is true! Actually, it is a good step! Frankly speaking, the Science syllabus of Class XI and Class XII are very tough and many students also start preparing for the Joint Entrance or IIT. In Colleges, you know; all those party unions and some other hooliganism hampers the classes. So, it is better to study Higher Secondary in schools only.
